Good Morning All – I hope you had an amazing weekend! As always, I like to start the week off right with some words of motivation or inspiration:
The Wake Does Not Drive the Boat
Every boat leaves a wake -- the trail in the water showing where it has been. But as Wayne Dyer explained; the wake can’t drive the boat... it’s just the trail left behind.
The same is true of our past.
Our childhood, relationships, accomplishments, disappointments and mistakes have all helped bring us to where we are today. They may explain some of our habits, reactions and beliefs -- but they do not have to determine every decision we make from this point forward.
Especially when we no longer want to keep repeating patterns that don't serve us:
I’ve always been this way.
Things never work out for me.
I tried before and it didn't work for me.
These ideas may begin as descriptions of our past, but repeated enough, they quietly become instructions for our future.
Too often, we live in our wake -- holding onto old pain, failures and disappointments to justify things we believe cannot change. The past can teach us, but it cannot move us forward.
What powers our boat today is the energy we create in the present:
The choices we make.
The beliefs we are willing to question.
The conversations we choose to have.
The actions we are prepared to take.
Changing direction may not happen instantly -- just like a large boat turning gradually. What matters is that we choose our direction based on where we want to go, not on where we have been.
This week, let's notice when we use our personal history as proof of something we don't like -- instead of saying:
That's is just who I am / how it goes / how it works ...
Let's say:
That is where I have been. What direction am I choosing now?
Our past may explain the path behind us, but it does not have to steer our life ahead of us.
Have an amazing week!
Sincerely,
